Building resilience: How to adapt to escalating climate impacts

James Murray is Editor-in-Chief of BusinessGreen, having launched the site in October 2007. He is responsible for BusinessGreen's leading news, opinion and analysis, and also contributes to the brand's expanding events' programme. James is one of the UK's leading commentators on the low carbon economy. He writes occasionally for The Guardian newspaper and has also reported for BBC Radio on a number of green technology stories. James reports daily on a wide range of green business issues, with a particular focus on low carbon policy, economics and technology. In March 2011, James was voted number eight in the Press Gazette's list of the top 50 environmental journalists in the UK. Prior to launching BusinessGreen, James spent five years as a technology journalist working on a variety of IT titles.

Tim’s teaching and research interests relate to professional practice and the rapid transition to sustainability and resilience priorities. Tim has a multi-disciplinary background in the built environment sector, with experience in architecture, construction and engineering contexts.

Tim holds a PhD in Architecture and an MSc in Theory and Practice of Sustainable Design from Cardiff University. He completed postdoctoral research at the Centre for Sustainable Development in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge, which he joined in 2015, before moving to CISL, where he was previously a Senior Research Associate.

Tim is particularly interested in challenges associated with existing buildings and infrastructure and with designing, constructing and operating built environments to meet changing climate and environmental conditions and social needs. He has led and supported university teaching across numerous degree programs related to sustainability for architecture, engineering and built environment practitioners. Outside of his work at Cambridge, Tim is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Resilience and Security at Norwich University (USA), he works in sustainability impact investment and in industry consultancy, and he supports various industry advisory panels and practitioner-led

Karl began his career in an intelligence role before taking up senior positions in both central and local government. During the 2010’s Karl successfully led several large public private partnership programmes in the regeneration, education, and energy sectors, before being appointed as Director of Property for the Royal London Borough of Kingston Upon Thames. Karl joined ENGIE in 2017 as Commercial Development Director before being promoted into his current role as Director of Strategy for EQUANS UK & Ireland in 2019. He is a graduate of the University of Cambridge Masters’ Programme in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment, an Academician at the Academy of Urbanism, and a Fellow of the University of Cambridge Centre for Science and Policy. Outside of work, Karl enjoys trail running, gravel biking, and snowboarding.

Garth leads the Climate Change and Sustainability team at Zurich Resilience Solutions UK at both a local and international level to drive new business growth in existing and new customer accounts by integrating Zurich’s Climate Change and Natural Hazard assessments offering to help customers reduce their operational and climate related risks while improving their resilience for the future. Garth Joined Zurich in March 2021 as a Senior Risk Engineer in the Energy Practice. Prior to joining Zurich, Garth gained experience in the natural resources sector, primarily involved with technical and management consulting in the Big 4 environment, focussing on mining, heavy industries and ESG. As a professional geologist, Garth holds a MSc in Mineral Resource Management from the University of the Free State in South Africa.
